Pfft! Who Needs Nyan Cat? We Have BACON!

Granted, the melodic rhythm of the Nyan Cat ‘theme’ can be quite enthralling, but do not fall for its siren song!  Nay, my friends.  For too long that feline idol has poisoned our ears and turned our brains into giggling, “kawaaaai!”-ing puddles of goo.

We have the cure.

How long has it been since you’ve thanked a pig from Minecraft for its trusty service?  It not only amuses and can randomly carry you along its travels with the proper attire, but it more often than not goes the way of the tauntaun. Only instead of sleeping in it, we hack it to bits to eat its gummy innards. Does it not deserve our praise?

I say we replace the kitty idol of old (heck, they conquered Egypt years ago.  They had their time!) and instead raise our pink friend to new heights!  Live long and amongst the stars, little one.

We salute you.

Minecraft Monday – PAX Prime Is Over… I Can Has Patch 1.8 Nao?

It came and went.  But man was that a buncha news in a short amount of time!  I kinda feel spoiled, actually.  I mean, I summed up the two livestream videos they posted and mainly the first one gave me pretty much all the information they handed out the rest of the time there.  And that video was recorded before it even officially opened doors.  I’m glad for the information, I just was hoping for a bit more juicy bits to come down the line.  Luckily Ben found an IGN video with just enough new stuff in it to tide over my anxiousness for 1.8 to finally be patched in.

There is some great info in that video.  Notch mentioned the night will be much brighter than it currently is and even to help older monitors like the one I have, there will be a ‘dimmer switch’ of sorts that allows you to raise or lower the gamma and brighten up the place to your liking.

More footage of the click-to-charge bow and that it can even crit which is nice.  As he killed things they dropped plenty of xp spheres which leveled him up and granted him three skill points per Ding.  There is nothing to spend them on, but there will be.  (Likely the combat upgrades I mentioned a bit ago.)

Some new combat mechanics I was not aware of is that if you attack while nearing the ground after a jump, that attack will always crit.  He used it on some cows, but the point was made.  (Poor cows!) He also showed off how far you can punt people with the dash attack, which was a pretty sizeable distance.

He also mentioned that the patch is likely going to be split in twain and released in two segments as it is getting too big for a single update.  The things we saw will likely be in 1.8 which Notch said will likely arrive in “a few weeks.”  Note he said a few and not one or more, so we are looking at the very least, two weeks before it goes live.

One thing for the Creation-minded folk out there is that he quickly scrolled through the items available to place when you are playing around in Creative Mode.  Most of the stuff looked familiar, but I took a few screen shots and pasted them into a glob for you to take a gander’.

Minecraft 1.8 - PAX Prime Creative Mode Inventory Items!

In the first section you can see new half blocks.  Likely sand stone (though it looks very much like sand) brick, and even a half block of that new gray stone brick that ruins or strongholds seem to be made of.  (Picture to compare if ya like.)  These look nice, and I’ve been wanting new half stone blocks for a while now.

The second section shows new stairs as well!  Brick, cobblestone, and possible that new gray stone brick stuff.  Kinda hard to make out even though it was a high quality recording.

The final section is the most exciting because it deals with food!  (My Chicago roots are showin’ don-cha-know!) Apparently the new ‘melon’ we can grow will actually be watermelon!  (I wasn’t sure if it would be honeydew or even cantaloupe when he first mentioned it, but now we know.)  Also you can see the new beef and chicken, as well as rotten flesh which zombies now drop instead of feathers.  (It looks like beef jerky next to the records.)  What I’m curious about though is the white and black fleckles beside the watermelon and meat.  New seeds?  Chocolate chips?  Perhaps the new items that you can add to your tools and make them stronger Jeb mentioned?  I dunno, but it intrigues me  ^_^

Quite the news well for most games out there, and Minecraft was not a disappointment in the slightest.  Seeing still images is one thing, but watching it ‘come alive’ in video and seeing the landscape from different view points really shows how the game is changing for the better.  I can’t wait to get in and charge around and spend skill points and all that with 1.8 or even 1.9 drops.  I’d like to explore the new biomes but even check out the NPC villages.  (The town well and blacksmith, in particular.) I’m still waiting to fight through a stronghold mingled with a ravine, but I’mma have to wait a bit longer.

How about you guys?  Anything you can’t wait to try out?  The improved and integrated Creative Mode got your interest?  Or maybe the vast new content for adventuring is more your style?

Minecraft PAtch 1.8 Livestream from PAX Prime – Part 2

Turns out there was a second video!  I had no idea haha  I kept adding notes to yesterday’s post and called it a day.  It was not until I checked out the site of long time blog bud Ben that I not only found out the livestream continued later on yesterday, but that the ponytail clad lass shown in the video is actually EZ herself!  I almost made a comment about her yesterday as to how she shares similar features with Christina Ricci but didn’t know that was his wife.  Color me surprised!

Anyway, thought I’d do a Cliff’s Notes of the second part of his livestream for completions sake.  There was a lot of repeated stuff I already covered yesterday, but still it’s news-y so here’s the video and the notes follow!

  • The start was mostly footage of a Creeper box-head raffle but about twenty minutes in Notch started to play the game for the crowd.  (All the footage of yesterday was just before anyone was allowed into the place.  In the last ten minutes or so you can hear Minecraft Chick mention they officially opened the doors.)
  • 18:50 –  Jeb tells the crowd how the hunger bar works. As I predicted a few weeks ago, keeping your hunger meter full and you’ll regenerate health over time similarly to how Peaceful mode works.  But if you let the bar get too low you’ll start *losing* health over time as well.  There will also be a cooldown on how often you can eat of a minute or so. Keep a stack of bread handy on your travels, which will be even easier now as food is finally stackable.
  • 20:00 – You can eat cooked chicken and beef, but at quite the cost.  If an animal dies off, it stays dead.  This was mentioned weeks ago and now seems to be official.  (Re-popping mobs is such a part of the game it’s actually hard to imagine, so it might help to think of them as moving versions of iron ore.)  Animal breeding will be added to the game as well, going hand-in-hand with farming wheat, reeds, and soon to be pumpkins and melons.
  • 21:00 – Creative Mode close-up of the items available.  Fans of Classic will recognize the similarities.  Also, you can fly and make servers be full-on creative havens at start-up.
  • 22:00 – Live Q n’ A starts, but the audio quality combined with the loud white noise of the massive crowds in attendance making this really hard to hear.
  • 22:20 – Question about TNT and how can you move it.  You can, of course.  (This was actually added in 1.7 a month or so ago.)
  • 22:50 – Will there be any more music from C415?  Yes!
  • 23:00 – Will there be new geography?  Yup, buncha new biome code.
  • 24:00 – Giant ravine!  Even without being filled with lava I was flashing back to the new Barrens in Cata.
  • 24:40 – Nothing new planned for redstone in 1.8.  It’s mostly about combat, and the explorer fans of Minecraft *have* been waiting for some love for quite a while.
  • The audio isn’t quite garbage, but I’ll just say the interference is amazing at this point.  Listen on at your own curiosity, but even though I’m a fan of the game I had to skip past most of this to the ending.  I could hear Minecraft Chick just fine, but the people asking questions and Notch were very quiet compared to the loud surroundings.

Luckily, most of the good stuff was found directly from Notch in the first part of the livestream I commented on yesterday, but there’s part two for all those inclined.  I did read a tweet that Notch made stating that “the rumors of 1.8 this sunday are greatly exaggerated. We’ll be in the air on our way to Sweden at that time.” (source)

While that shoots down this Sunday’s release, that doesn’t damping both the excitement and the knowledge that everything we saw yesterday and today are already up and running with working code.  Minus a few tweaks, that baby’s all done!  Keep being patient, buds!  Patch 1.8 and all the adventure goodness it will provide is just a short distance away ^_^

Minecraft 1.8 – Livestream from PAX Prime with Notch!

Just caught this linky from Notch’s twitter feed and have been watching it since.  WordPress won’t let me embed it, so click away if you are curious on the new goings on!

If you wish to view it, feel free.  I’ll be typing up a Cliff’s Notes version with a timestamp so you can see the topic at hand!  I’ll be editing the post frequently to keep updating the new info as I type it all out ^_^  Happy viewing!

– – – – – – – – – – – – –

  • Right away you’ll be greeted with cheers and “woots!”, but most importantly a brand new title screen with rolling vistas and shinies!
  • 2:19 – Something interesting I read the other day was Jeb said old maps wouldn’t work with 1.8, yet I can clearly see a world save that states it is a Survival Mode.  Could this just be a fresh save named ‘survival’ to differ with the Classic mode that will also be packed in?
  • 2:40ish – Notch makes a new Creative Mode world and begins flying around in search of villages!
  • 3:22 – Lava, ho!  Looks quite bright, and Notch comments about the new bigger and unique-looking biome code that is in 1.8.  Hilly vs desert will look more hilly and more deserty, respectively. Still looking for a village.
  • 3:37 Found a village!  Took two worlds but it was a successful operation ^_^  Notch comments that the NPC villages will usually spawn near your first spawn point to make things easier, as trading and all that will play a part in 1.8 and on.  Can’t trade with people you can’t find, after all.
  • 4:20 – Watermelon – Currently not in the game.
  • 4:30 – The water and village code might need a tweak, the place looks trashed and he thankfully doesn’t dwell there long.
  • 4:46 – The new and improved Click-to-Charge bow!  Looks mighty spiffy in action and makes me harken to the Huntsman from Team Fortress 2 hee hee
  • 5:20 – Eating animation is in, and looks awesome!  I’m sure someone is going to rip Notch’s “om-nom-nom” ‘s and make a custom ringtone out of it.
  • 5:55 – He starts messing with time to show the new ‘no-lag’ lighting effects in game.
  • 6:15ish – Mentions skill points and xp.  He specifically mentions you cannot yet spend the points, which is a good hint at the upcoming patch.  If you have to spend the points, you can pick and choose (at least in which order) what abilities you want to get.  Some games you ding and poof, you have a set ability that is hard-coded to the linear leveling process.  Having the option to spend them means you won’t be forced to get what the developers give you.  I hope this idea sticks.
  • 6:45 – The camera man’s years at college and life’s choices are brought into question when he proceeds to wonder why the feed suddenly grew dark.  I’ll be nice and go out on a limb for the poor guy and say it was his closeness to the aura of awesome that encircles Notch that distracted him.
  • 7:40 – Notch fires off a few of the new dash attacks.
  • 9:49 – Endermen spotted!
  • 10:06 – First death.  You get a glimpse at just how tall the Endermen are compared to other baddies at least.
  • 10:40 – You can see just how far those arrows can fly with the new charging mechanic. Spoiler: Quite far ^_^
  • 10:50 – Notch says current worlds will work in 1.8, but it will not have new content.  Previous patches required you to run to new areas to spawn the new stuff, but it seems like this will not be the case.  The audio quality got a little iffy so I couldn’t make it out perfectly, I could be off.
  • 11:38 – Notch shows off the new Creative Mode item list where you can place any item in the world.  This will be a welcome addition to people who aren’t huge on adding mods, plus I’ve been needed to tinker with redstone and mining all the components is quite a hassle.  As I’d only need to hop on and try out an idea, something like this would be a great help and huge time saver.
  • 13:00 – Fish confirmed.  School of fish?  Silver fish? Tuna fish?  Couldn’t quite make it out, but whatever it is, it’s in ^_^
  • 13:49 – Massive underground area spotted.  Includes a mineshaft with railroad tracks, wooden beams, and cobwebs.
  • 15:00 – Notch shows off how seamlessly days and nights now change the landscape.  Again, it’s on a beefy PC, but Notch did convert the code to be far less of a drag on servers and RAM and all that.
  • 16:20 – In Creative Mode at least, you can destroy bedrock.  Notch then shows there is no infinite world below the ‘bottom’ of the world.  It is now filled with particles.  And death.
  • 19:30 – The xp spheres!  Look a lot like Scott Pilgrim coins to me.  Either way, you kill something and they suck towards ya like in Kingdom Hearts.  No use for em yet, still cool though.
  • 19:50 – My favorite part of the video so far.  An NPC blacksmith!  It just looks so cool! XD
  • 20:26 – Re-confirmed spendage of xp spheres on specific abilities of your choosing.
  • 22:35 A River leading to an ocean.  It’s actually pretty big, I thought the river’s would be small, but these are like 6+ blocks across.
  • 23:42 – He might add Rainforests, “I think so, yeah. And swamps.  I really want swamps.”
  • 25:45 – Second death.
  • 28:00 – New graphic sliders for brightness and whatnots.
  • 29:59   – Gets hit with a weird green thing, poison damage from a skeleton’s arrow, perhaps?
  • 32:00 Up-close and personal with Endermen! Apparently they die in water though.
  • 32:52 – Shows how different biome generation is taking shape. Just random to look cool while avoiding being too ‘busy’.
  • 34:30 – Quite a big pumpkin patch.
  • 38:00 – Xperia’s Minecraft in action
  • 38:50 – While the movement doesn’t help the quality at all, I think anyone can make out that pink ‘do from a mile away.  Minecraft Chick was in attendance!
  • 40:00 – Big ol’ NPC village and a huge house or town hall or something.
  • 40:15  – The town well!  Nice touch, wasn’t expecting to see on of those haha
  • 43:00 – Cobalt in action, another game in the works.  Looks like a side-scroller shooter with capture the flag elements, at least in the mode showcased.
  • 45:00 – Hands-on with Minecraft Pocket Edition.
  • 46:25 – Classic Minecraft music chords playing in the background, along with random snarls and damage sounds from other players nearby.  Just wanted to give that music a shout out of its own :P
  • 48:36 – Minecraft Chick takes a shot of Jakob taking a shot of her.  Trippy.

There were also a few Official “Maybe” ‘d items from Notch during his narration, namely Whales, Ships or even larger vehicles, Volcanoes (“Kinda easy to do in the new biome code.”), as well as Rainforest and swamp biomes.  I’d like to see alligators or crocs’ in the swamp with hanging moss, but that’s another topic.

No official release date yet set, but it HAS to come out before November 18th or so.  So much is already in there, and a few times they mentioned they are likely to release 1.8 then a 1.8.2 or something to fit it all in.  They mentioned maybe Nether stuff in 1.9 or later, but adventure and combat specifically had to go in before launch in November.  So cross your fingers and don’t hold your breath!  Patch 1.8 is right around the corner and I’m guessing sometime in the middle of next month.

When Worlds Collide…

Last Minecraft Monday I posted about how awesome it was to see Notch not only mention, but darn right support Quake 3 and it’s greatness.  Imagine my surprise when checking his twitter feed today to see the one and only David Jaffe having a short convo with the Notch-man! (I’ll link to it, but there’s a big ol’ TMI warning in effect.  Let’s just say the next person to respond said “Can’t unsee!”

Since I got the post all situated, here’s some random findings about the games I’ve found out tonight:

Twisted Metal

  • Twisted Metal will apparently have a demo before launch.
  • Rated games might be region locked, unranked are not.
  • Twister will not be in this TM.  Maybe DLC, sayth The Jaffe.
  • When you level up online, you unlock new ‘items’.  Everything has a pro and a con, and they are sure not to make anything imbalanced so high levels will not innately dominate low levels, etc.

  • After 1.8 comes 1.9 and 1.10, not 2.0.  (Random factoid I suppose)
  • Notch will give his hat away, but promises to buy a new one, hah.
  • The demo of patch 1.8 will apparently be quite flat by comparison to how Notch had planned it.  It is a temporary work around to allow NPC villages to look good and saves time.  (Make that the first proposed thing they need to change before 1.8 goes live for the rest of us!)
  • Notch is stressed out about making the deadline and is keeping quite to avoid upsetting fans.   He wishes not to make promises that might not materialize in time, and since the press is going to be doing all the hands-on, I can see why he wouldn’t want to bother ‘those’ guys XD

As I originally planned on just making the post about the funny collision of my gaming worlds, I didn’t copy/paste all these tweets before hand so I’d have to do quite a lot of digging and checking to make sure I got the links in the right order, so let’s just trust my findings without factual linkage this once, mmm’kay?  All of them were posted before August 24th, in case you *really* want to fact check for an essay or something.  Yay random google hits!  In that case, good luck on that essay, Mr. Essay Writer From the Future!

Minecraft Monday: A River Runs Through It! Plus, Notch Challenges Bethsda to a Fight to the DEATH!

What a week!  Man, Notch has been busy!  First he gets married, takes some time off, and poof!  Right back into coding.  I have to say it is quite nice to see all the changes taking shape, though I am a little leery about the islands and rivers, but ya’ll might not know about that.  So let’s jump right in, shall we?

Minecraft News

Let’s get the “Fight to the Death” outta the way first.  Notch blogged a few days ago in a public message to Bethesda’s lawyer branch:

“I challenge Bethesda to a game of Quake 3. Three of our best warriors against three of your best warriors. We select one level, you select the other, we randomize the order. 20 minute matches, highest total frag count per team across both levels wins.

If we win, you drop the lawsuit.

If you win, we will change the name of Scrolls to something you’re fine with. … I am serious, by the way.”

How awesome is that?  Honestly!  That’s pretty flippin’ sweet!  Not only is he actually willing to go through with this in such a laid back way, but the style he does it in is outstanding.  Quake 3!  My fav. shooter of all time!  (Almost did an accidental imitation of Kanye there, “Of all time!“)  No matter what the outcome everyone would end up winners.  Though later on Notch did mention a minor flaw in his planning:

“considering they’re in the same company as id Software, q3 might’ve been a poor choice. ;)” (source)

His co-worker Jeb commented that the pressure is starting to get heavy on them to make it in time for PAX, and all of the changes Notch mentioned just in the past few hours is pretty intense.  So far he has mentioned changing the process of generating land masses, adding rivers and how they work, and admitted he made an ocean biome.  Speaking of his co-worker, someone asked Notch if fences will have their own gate in patch 1.8 as there will be window panes which look similar.  In response Notch simply stated, “ask jeb!” So we might end up getting those in 1.8, too!

Here’s a picture of rivers and what I can fairly safely assume are biomes.

I think the amount of river water might actually be a bit much, but we’ll see how he tweaks it as the time comes.  He already admitted that while he can easily make much larger biomes and landmasses, they did not play very well.  When asked directly he responded frankly, stating that if he kept them that large they are “kind of dull.”  Either way, here is a picture of a river he took first hand!

Note the giant radiant mushroom at the bottom (actually there are three in the picture if ya look close), as well as pumpkins on the bottom left.   Don’t freak out too much about how high and low things are, I think he tweaked the layout personally as he mentioned it was “force high height contrast.”

Finally, Notch hinted that he might auction off his trademark hat at PAX next week, adding “It smells slightly funky, but it still works.” (source)

He is currently making a short game for Ludum Dare 48 and he’s doin’ it live!  He’s wrapping it up now, but here’s a link in case you wanna see or catch clips if you click it a bit late:

‘Craft long and prosper, friends!

WoW Patch 4.3: Revenge of the Re-subs!

Welp, this is kinda funny.  I had my younger cousin visiting for a while and we got to talking about WoW.  Namely he wanted to play it, and I did not.  And since his character is on my account, I opted to keep the account frozen as there is nothing in-game right now that tickles my fancy.  The funny bit I mentioned above was we got on the topic of what worked in WoW, what didn’t, and just that whole line of thought.  He asked if they ever will do a ‘looking for raid’ sort of thing they added way back in 3.3 with the dungeon finder.  I said it’s possible, but who knows how long it will take them to do it, while grudgingly admitting I might even resub if a lot of the potential kinks in the raid setting were handled.  (People can’t get out of fire in the ZG/ZA instances, I can only imagine the repairs…)

I was actually thinking about doing a “So what if…?” post about how having a Raid Finder sort of thing would likely boost WoW right back and net a hefty amount of those subs that dropped off.  Well, looks like Blizz beat me to it!  MMO Champion reports that there IS going to be a raid finder in 4.3, among a lot more nifty stuff!

-Deathwing raid will be available (mind you, it took months for Arthas to unlock so don’t expect to jump right into him, they need to stall for the next xpack after all -_^)

-New 5-mans, one supposedly dealing with the War of the Ancients in the Caverns of Time.  Insert your own DotA joke huah’.

-Darkmoon Faire will have it’s own island.  And at least one new game, Whack-A-Gnome.  Male gnome subscribers under the age of thirty just skyrocketed by that admission alone, I’m sure.

Transmogrification – A process to turn the look of your current gear into other, older or just different, gear.  If you really like the look of Tier 5, for example, you pay the Etheral NPCs to change the appearance of your current item into that same model.  You can’t turn plate into a cloth item though, and it seems you’ll need the original item you wish to ‘steal’ the look of for this to work.  Which is annoying as most people never even got a shot at Tier 2, and that’s really the only tier I’d ever want to wear on my Warrior.

-Transmogrification Bank – Place to store all these items.  It will lose all the enhancements and gems and that placed upon them, but the storage is huge!  Like 100+ slots.  My entire bank will be finally opened up.  I still got like five guns and bows from BC that I thought looked awesome.

-Raid Finder – As I mentioned already, this will be in-game.  MMO specifically states: “The Raid Finder will be introduced in Patch 4.3, it will work like the Dungeon Finder.”  Short and sweet.  Just bring a bag full of hope, and another bag full of gold.  I’m sure this trip is going to be a bumpy ride.
